Osmoreguláció is the process by which organisms maintain a stable internal environment, particularly in terms of water and solute concentrations, regardless of external environmental changes. This balance is crucial for the proper functioning of cells and overall organism survival.

Different organisms have evolved various strategies to achieve osmoregulation. Aquatic organisms, for example, face different challenges depending on whether they live in freshwater or saltwater. Freshwater organisms tend to gain water by osmosis and lose salts, so they actively excrete excess water and absorb salts from their environment. Saltwater organisms, conversely, tend to lose water and gain salts. They cope by drinking large amounts of saltwater, excreting excess salts through specialized organs or cells, and producing concentrated urine.

Terrestrial organisms must conserve water and prevent dehydration. They often have adaptations like impermeable outer coverings (e.g., skin, cuticle) to reduce water loss. Kidneys play a vital role in osmoregulation for many terrestrial animals, allowing them to control the concentration of urine and reabsorb water. Plants also osmoregulate, primarily through water uptake by roots and transpiration from leaves, with their cells maintaining turgor pressure through the movement of water across cell membranes.

The underlying mechanism for osmoregulation in all organisms involves the movement of water and solutes across semipermeable membranes, driven by osmotic pressure differences. This active and passive transport allows for the precise control needed to maintain homeostasis in a constantly fluctuating external world.
