An oscilloscope, often referred to as an oscillóskóp in Hungarian, is an electronic test instrument that visually displays varying electrical signals, typically as a two-dimensional graph of an electrical signal's amplitude versus time. It is widely used in electronics troubleshooting, design, and development to observe the shape, frequency, and other characteristics of electrical signals.

The basic oscilloscope consists of a cathode-ray tube (CRT) or a modern digital display, horizontal and vertical input amplifiers, a time-base generator, and a power supply. The horizontal axis represents time, while the vertical axis represents voltage. By adjusting the controls, users can scale and position the waveform on the screen for detailed analysis.

Early oscilloscopes used cathode-ray tubes, which allowed for real-time visualization of analog signals. Modern oscilloscopes often incorporate digital storage capabilities, enabling the capture and analysis of transient signals that might otherwise be missed. Digital oscilloscopes (DOSC) convert the analog signal into a digital format, allowing for more advanced features such as waveform storage, mathematical operations, and connectivity to computers for further analysis.
