Osaamisalat, plural for areas of competence, is a term used in the Finnish education system to describe defined fields of competence within vocational qualifications. An osaamisala specifies the knowledge, skills and tasks associated with a particular area of work within a qualification.

In vocational education and training (VET), every qualification is composed of osaamisalat that determine the content of the training, the learning outcomes, and the criteria used to assess a student’s progress. Students demonstrate competence in one or more osaamisalat in order to earn the qualification. The structure aims to align education with labor market needs and to facilitate validation of prior learning.

Osaamisalat are developed and maintained by national education authorities and sector groups, with the Finnish National Agency for Education (Opetushallitus) playing a central role. They are periodically updated to reflect changes in technology, industry practices, and regulations. The concept supports a modular, competency-based approach to learning and allows flexibility in combining osaamisalat across qualifications; it also supports recognition of cross-disciplinary competences.

The term is used to organize curricula, assessment criteria and certification processes within Finland’s vocational education system.
