Orðaflokkar, also known as parts of speech, are categories that words are classified into based on their grammatical function and meaning. In Icelandic, as in many other languages, these categories help us understand how words work together in sentences. The main orðaflokkar include nafnorð (nouns), sagnir (verbs), lýsingarorð (adjectives), atviksorð (adverbs), fornafn (pronouns), samtengingar (conjunctions), fyrir- og eftirleggir (prepositions and postpositions), og ábendingarorð (determiners).

Nouns represent people, places, things, or ideas. Verbs describe actions or states of being. Adjectives modify nouns, providing more detail about their qualities. Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, indicating how, when, where, or to what extent something happens. Pronouns stand in for nouns. Conjunctions connect words, phrases, or clauses. Prepositions and postpositions show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence, often indicating location or time. Determiners, such as articles, specify the noun.

Understanding orðaflokkar is fundamental for learning grammar and constructing coherent sentences. Each orðaflokkur has its own set of rules regarding agreement, conjugation, or declension, which vary depending on the specific language. Icelandic grammar, in particular, features a rich system of declension for nouns, adjectives, and pronouns, making the correct identification of orðaflokkar crucial for accurate usage.
