orontium

Orontium is a genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae. The genus contains a single species, Orontium aquaticum, commonly known as goldenclub. This aquatic perennial is native to the eastern United States and southeastern Canada, found in shallow, slow-moving water such as swamps, bogs, and the edges of ponds and streams.

Goldenclub is characterized by its smooth, oblong leaves that float on or emerge just above the water surface. The leaves are a deep green and can grow up to 50 centimeters long. The most distinctive feature of the plant is its inflorescence, which consists of a creamy white spadix, often referred to as the "golden club," that emerges on a sturdy stalk. This spadix is densely covered with tiny, greenish-yellow flowers. Blooming typically occurs in late spring to early summer.

The plant produces a thick rhizome that anchors it in the muddy substrate. The seeds are fleshy and are dispersed by water. Goldenclub is an important component of wetland ecosystems, providing habitat and food for various aquatic organisms. Historically, Native American tribes used parts of the plant for medicinal purposes and as a food source after proper preparation to remove irritating calcium oxalate crystals. It is also cultivated as an ornamental plant in water gardens.
