Ordlek is a term used in speculative linguistics and puzzle fiction to describe a method of encoding multiple levels of meaning through deliberate word order and lexical choice. In this sense, ordlek functions as a narrative and analytical device rather than a widely adopted linguistic theory.

Its etymology is informal; the word appears to fuse "order" and "lexicon" or "lexeme" and has appeared in online discussions and worldbuilding communities since the 2010s. Because ordlek is not standardized, different creators outline varying inventories of permissible orders and lexemes.

Mechanism: ordlek relies on a constrained lexicon partitioned into semantic slots (such as agent, action, patient). The canonical order of a sentence conveys the primary message. An alternative order, often with substituted synonyms within slots, can signal a secondary reading or emphasis. Decoding requires knowledge of the encoding rules and the lexicon used in that particular ordlek system; without it, the additional meaning remains opaque.

Applications and reception: In fiction and puzzles, ordlek serves to convey layered meaning, deepen worldbuilding, or challenge readers to infer hidden interpretations. It is not an established theory in linguistics and has limited practical use outside speculative contexts.

Example: In a fictional ordlek system, a sentence with the canonical agent-verb-patient order might be paired with an alternate order that highlights process or agency, yielding two readings from the same surface form. The same lexicon thus supports multiple legitimate interpretations, depending on the chosen order.
