Ordinal marking refers to the practice of appending specific letters or symbols to numbers to indicate their position in a sequence or order. This is most commonly seen in written English. For instance, the number one is followed by "st" to form "1st" (first), two by "nd" to form "2nd" (second), three by "rd" to form "3rd" (third), and all subsequent numbers up to twenty-one are followed by "th" (e.g., 4th, 10th, 21st). After twenty-one, the "st", "nd", and "rd" endings are generally only used for numbers ending in one, two, or three respectively (e.g., 22nd, 23rd, but 24th).
