Ordestatistieken, a Dutch term roughly translating to "order statistics," refers to a branch of statistics that studies the properties of ordered random variables. When a sample of random variables is drawn from a probability distribution, these variables can be arranged in ascending order. The resulting ordered values are known as order statistics.

The smallest value in the ordered sample is the first order statistic, often denoted as X_(1). The second smallest is X_(2), and so on, up to the largest value, which is the n-th order statistic, X_(n), for a sample of size n. These statistics provide valuable information about the distribution and characteristics of the data.

Key areas of study within order statistics include the probability distributions of individual order statistics, their expected values, variances, and covariances. Researchers also investigate the distributions of functions of order statistics, such as the range (X_(n) - X_(1)) or the median.
