orbitierender

Orbitierender is a German term describing an object that is in orbit around another body. In astronomy and spaceflight contexts, a orbitierender Körper (orbiting body) is any object that is gravitationally bound to a more massive primary and follows a curved trajectory around it, typically described by orbital elements.

The motion of an orbitierender body is governed by gravity. In the two-body approximation the orbit is an ellipse with the primary at a focus, and its shape and timing are captured by orbital elements such as the semi-major axis, eccentricity, inclination, longitude of the ascending node, argument of periapsis, and mean anomaly. Orbits can be circular (eccentricity zero), elliptical (0 < e < 1), or unbound (parabolic or hyperbolic) for objects that are not gravitationally bound. A bound orbit corresponds to negative orbital energy, while escape trajectories are not described as orbitierend in the strict sense.

Examples range from natural satellites like the Moon orbiting Earth to artificial satellites circling Earth, as well as planets orbiting stars and moons orbiting planets. Exoplanets and other captured bodies may also be described as orbitierende in German-language discussions of orbital dynamics.

In English usage, the equivalent terms are orbiting body or orbiting object. The German form orbitierender is common in scientific and educational writing, serving as an attributive adjective or as a nominal form when referring to the class of orbiting bodies.
