Opposedirection refers to a relationship between two entities—such as vectors, lines, or pathways—in which they point in exactly opposite directions along a common line or axis. In mathematical contexts, two directions are opposed if one is the negative of the other; this means they share the same line of action but have opposite orientation. The term can also describe two paths moving in reverse along a shared route.

In vector mathematics, a direction is represented by a unit vector; two unit vectors u and v are in oppositedirection if v = -u. For nonzero vectors, this implies they are collinear and oriented in opposite senses. The magnitude may differ when considering non-unit vectors, but the directional relationship remains opposite. The sum of oppositedirection pairs can yield zero when their magnitudes are equal and directions opposite.

In physics and engineering, oppositedirection commonly arises in discussions of forces, velocities, or currents along a single axis. For example, two forces acting on an object in opposite directions along the same line cancel to produce a net force of zero if equal in magnitude.
