Opposedness is the quality or state of being opposed, the condition in which two or more things stand in opposition to one another. The term is used across disciplines to describe a relationship of disagreement, contrast, or antagonism between entities, ideas, or states of affairs. Etymologically, it combines opposed with the suffix -ness to form a noun describing such relational opposition.

In logic and philosophy, opposedness characterizes relations between propositions or states that are mutually incompatible or diametrically opposed. Classical logic distinguishes between contraries (which cannot both be true but can both be false) and contradictions (which cannot both be true or false). The degree of opposedness can be described as strong when the truth of one asserts the falsehood of the other.

In political and social contexts, opposedness appears as opposition between groups, parties, or ideologies. Policy debates often hinge on opposedness of outcomes, values, or priorities, and public opinion can reflect the strength of these opposing positions.

In biology and neuroscience, opposing systems provide functional balance, such as antagonistic muscle groups (biceps and triceps) or excitatory and inhibitory neural pathways. The concept helps explain coordination, homeostasis, and reflex control.

In aesthetics and design, opposedness is seen in color contrast, complementary shapes, or tonal opposition that creates visual tension or emphasis.
