The form of an opinnäyte varies by degree and field. In universities of applied sciences (ammattikorkeakoulu), the opinnäyte is typically a development or research project aligned with professional practice. In traditional universities, it may take the form of a bachelor’s thesis, a master’s thesis, or an equivalent final project. Some programs emphasize a written report, others a product, service design project, artistic work, or a portfolio.

The process usually includes topic selection, planning with a supervisor, literature review, methodology or design work, data collection or implementation, analysis and interpretation, and the preparation of a final report. Depending on the program, the opinnäyte may also involve a public defence or oral presentation and a formal assessment.

Assessment criteria are defined by the degree programme and typically cover methodological quality, relevance and significance, originality or contribution to the field, and the ability to communicate results. Language options vary; opinnäytteet can be written in Finnish, Swedish, or English, depending on the program and institution.
