Operkulum is a term that most often appears as a variant spelling of operculum, a lid-like structure found in several animal groups. In English, the accepted term is typically operculum, but operkulum may be encountered in some texts or transliterations. The word derives from Latin operculum, meaning “little lid.”

In fishes, the operculum is a bony plate that covers the gills and forms part of the gill cover. It protects the delicate gill filaments and works with surrounding bones such as the preopercle and subopercle. The operculum also plays a mechanical role in ventilation: when the mouth opens to draw in water, the opercular valve closes inward, helping to push water over the gills as the animal pumps it through the gill chamber.
