Opele is a traditional divination instrument used in the Yoruba religious system of Ifá. It is a ritual tool used by trained practitioners to obtain guidance from Orunmila, the deity of wisdom and divination. The opele consists of a short chain or cord with several linked segments, often made from metal, shell, wood, or seeds. When cast, the chain falls in a pattern that is interpreted as one of the sixteen primary odù, the sacred signs of Ifá. Each odù has associated verses, stories, and ethical guidance that the diviner recites and interprets in relation to the consultation.
