Oogenesis is the biological process by which female mammals produce gametes, or egg cells, through a specialized form of cell division known as meiosis. This process occurs primarily within the ovaries and is essential for sexual reproduction, as it generates haploid ova capable of fusing with sperm to form a diploid zygote.

The development of an egg begins during fetal life, when primordial germ cells in the ovaries differentiate into oogonia. These cells undergo multiple rounds of mitosis to increase their numbers before entering prophase I of meiosis. At this stage, they become primary oocytes, which are arrested in this phase until puberty. Each primary oocyte is surrounded by a layer of follicular cells, forming a structure called a primordial follicle.

During the reproductive years, hormonal signals stimulate the maturation of follicles. One primary oocyte per menstrual cycle completes meiosis I, producing a secondary oocyte and a smaller polar body. The secondary oocyte then enters meiosis II but pauses at metaphase until fertilization occurs. If fertilization is successful, the secondary oocyte completes meiosis II, yielding a mature ovum and another polar body. The polar bodies, which contain minimal cytoplasm, eventually degenerate, ensuring that nearly all the cytoplasm and organelles are retained in the ovum.

Unlike spermatogenesis, oogenesis is highly inefficient, as only one functional ovum is produced per cycle, while the other products (polar bodies) are nonviable. The process is also asymmetric, meaning the cytoplasm divides unevenly, resulting in a large ovum and smaller polar bodies. This ensures the ovum has sufficient resources to support early embryonic development. Any disruption in oogenesis can lead to infertility or genetic abnormalities in offspring.
