Ontroesten, also known as derusting, is the removal of rust (iron oxide) from iron and steel surfaces to restore appearance, reduce pitting, and improve adhesion of protective coatings. Rust develops when iron reacts with water and oxygen, often accelerated by salts or acids, and can compromise structural integrity if left unchecked. Derusting is common in marine, automotive, industrial, and infrastructure maintenance.

Methods range from mechanical to chemical and electrochemical processes. Mechanical approaches include wire brushing, grinding, sanding, and abrasive blasting; they are fast and do not introduce chemicals but can damage delicate features and may require subsequent smoothing. Chemical rust removers employ acids or chelating agents to dissolve rust; phosphoric or oxalic acids are typical examples. They require careful handling, rinsing, and proper disposal. Electrolytic rust removal uses direct current with a sacrificial anode to convert iron oxide back to metal, suitable for complex shapes but generates hydrogen gas and needs careful control.

After rust removal, surfaces are often more reactive and must be protected. Immediate priming and coating with paint, varnish, or galvanization reduces re-oxidation. Rust converters can be used to stabilize remaining oxide by forming a protective layer, though they do not restore metal strength to the same degree as complete removal.

Safety and environmental considerations include PPE, ventilation, spill control, and proper disposal of chemical waste. Derusting is a preparatory step in restoration and maintenance to extend service life and improve surface quality.
