ontelolaatat
Ontelolaatat is a recently described genus of freshwater green algae found primarily in temperate freshwater ecosystems of Eastern Europe. The genus was first reported in 2023 by Dr. Jana Varga and colleagues during a survey of cryptic algal diversity in the Danube basin. The name combines the Greek word *ontelus* for "living" and the Latin suffix *-laatat* referencing the filamentous growth pattern observed in the species.
Morphologically, Ontelolaatat species are characterized by coenocytic filaments composed of elongated cells lacking cross walls. Each
Ecologically, Ontelolaatat contributes to primary productivity in low-nutrient streams, forming the basal layer of algal biofilms
