The term is derived from the French words "ouvrir" meaning "to open" and "poinçon" meaning "nail" or "point".

This method is typically employed for fine-tuning and adjusting the size of a wooden object, such as a chair leg or table top. A small, fine-pointed tool, often a types of chisel or gouge, is used to carefully remove tiny amounts of wood from a specific area.

To practice oloupnout, the craftsman must carefully assess the object, identifying the area requiring adjustment. A small, precise mark is then made on the surface to guide the removal process. Next, a fine-pointed tool is brought to the marked area, held at a precise angle, and used to gently remove a very small amount of material. This is repeated until the desired size is achieved.
