Oljekällor, also known as oil seeps or petroleum seeps, are natural outcrops of crude oil on the Earth's surface. These seeps occur where underground petroleum reservoirs are connected to the surface through faults, fissures, or porous rock formations. The oil can manifest in various forms, ranging from thick, tar-like substances to thin, liquid flows.

Historically, oljekällor were among the earliest sources of petroleum exploited by humans. Indigenous peoples and early civilizations often collected the oil for medicinal purposes, waterproofing, or as a fuel source. The famous La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles are a well-known example of a large-scale oljekälla that has been active for tens of thousands of years, trapping numerous prehistoric animals.

Modern exploration for commercial oil reserves sometimes uses the presence of oljekällor as an indicator of underlying hydrocarbon deposits. However, the volume of oil released from natural seeps is typically too small to be economically viable for large-scale extraction. Environmental concerns are also associated with oljekällor, as they can contribute to pollution and harm local ecosystems. Nevertheless, they remain important geological features that provide insights into subsurface petroleum systems and the history of oil formation and migration.
