Oksüdeerumisastet is a term used in chemistry to describe the hypothetical charge an atom would have if all bonds to atoms of different elements were completely ionic. It is a bookkeeping tool used to track electrons in chemical reactions, particularly in redox (reduction-oxidation) reactions. This concept is not a literal charge but rather a convention.

The sum of the oxidation states of all atoms in a neutral molecule is zero. For a polyatomic ion, the sum of the oxidation states equals the charge of the ion. Certain elements have predictable oxidation states in most compounds. For instance, alkali metals (Group 1) almost always have an oxidation state of +1, and alkaline earth metals (Group 2) typically have +2. Oxygen usually has an oxidation state of -2, except in peroxides where it is -1, and when bonded to fluorine where it can be positive. Hydrogen typically has an oxidation state of +1 when bonded to nonmetals and -1 when bonded to metals. Fluorine always has an oxidation state of -1.

By applying a set of rules, one can assign oxidation states to each atom in a compound or ion. This assignment helps in understanding how electrons are transferred during a chemical reaction. For example, in the reaction between zinc and copper sulfate, the oxidation state of zinc changes from 0 to +2, indicating it has lost two electrons (oxidation), while the copper in copper sulfate changes from +2 to 0, indicating it has gained two electrons (reduction).
