Ootsuolitulehdus refers to inflammation of the apocrine sweat glands, also known as apocrine adenitis. These glands are primarily located in areas with abundant hair follicles, such as the armpits, groin, and around the nipples. Ootsuolitulehdus can manifest in various ways, often presenting as tender, red lumps or nodules within the skin. These may sometimes form abscesses that can rupture and drain pus.

The exact cause of ootsuolitulehdus is not always clear, but it is believed to be related to blockages or infections within the apocrine ducts. Factors such as bacterial or fungal infections, hormonal changes, and certain inflammatory conditions can contribute to its development. It is more common in adults than children.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination of the affected areas and sometimes a biopsy of the tissue to confirm the inflammation of the apocrine glands. Treatment strategies depend on the severity and underlying cause. Mild cases may respond to topical or oral antibiotics. More severe or persistent inflammation might require surgical intervention, such as incision and drainage of abscesses or, in some chronic cases, removal of the affected glands.
