Ohjainkoodia, known in English as device driver, is a specialized type of computer program that allows higher-level computer programs to interact with a hardware device. Essentially, it acts as a translator between the operating system and the hardware. Without a device driver, the operating system would not know how to communicate with or control the hardware, rendering it useless.

Device drivers are essential for the proper functioning of almost all hardware components connected to a computer, including printers, graphics cards, sound cards, network adapters, and mice. When a user or an application wants to perform an action with a piece of hardware, such as printing a document, the operating system sends a request. The device driver receives this request, translates it into a language that the specific hardware can understand, and then sends the appropriate commands to the hardware. Conversely, when the hardware needs to send information back to the operating system, the device driver receives this information and translates it into a format the operating system can process.

Device drivers are typically developed by the manufacturers of the hardware devices. They are often included with the operating system installation or can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website. Keeping device drivers updated is important for performance, stability, and security, as updates often include bug fixes and improvements. Different operating systems, such as Windows, macOS, and Linux, require different device drivers for the same hardware.
