Ofnæmiskvefi, also known as allergic alveolitis or hypersensitivity pneumonitis, is a rare immune system disorder that affects the lungs. It is triggered by an allergic reaction to inhaled organic dusts. When an individual is repeatedly exposed to these airborne allergens, their immune system can become sensitized. Upon subsequent exposure, the immune system overreacts, leading to inflammation in the alveoli, the tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs.

Common triggers for ofnæmiskvefi include mold spores found in damp environments, bird droppings and feathers from pet birds or poultry, and bacteria present in contaminated humidifiers or hot tubs. Symptoms can vary depending on the severity and duration of exposure. Acute cases may present with flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, and shortness of breath, typically appearing several hours after exposure. Chronic ofnæmiskvefi develops over time with prolonged or repeated exposure, often leading to progressive scarring (fibrosis) of the lung tissue. This can result in persistent shortness of breath, fatigue, and weight loss.

Diagnosis usually involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, lung function tests, and sometimes imaging studies like chest X-rays or CT scans. Identifying and avoiding the offending allergen is the cornerstone of treatment. In acute cases, removal from the exposure source can lead to improvement. For chronic cases, or when symptoms are severe, corticosteroids may be prescribed to reduce inflammation. In advanced stages with significant lung scarring, treatment options may be limited. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial to prevent irreversible lung damage.
