OES, or Open Enterprise Server, is a network operating system originally developed by Novell to provide a Linux-based platform that preserves and extends NetWare services. It combined SUSE Linux Enterprise Server as the base OS with NetWare-inspired services, enabling organizations to run Linux and NetWare applications within a single environment.

Key components of OES include NSS (Novell Storage Services) for the file system, eDirectory as the directory service, and integrated management and services such as iFolder for file synchronization and iPrint for printing. OES also incorporated ZENworks for systems management, allowing centralized configuration, deployment, and maintenance across mixed Linux and NetWare environments. The goal was to offer a migration path from NetWare to Linux while maintaining compatibility with existing NetWare-era services and workflows.

History and development: OES was introduced as a way to bridge NetWare and Linux, allowing customers to migrate gradually while retaining essential services. In 2010, Novell was acquired by The Attachmate Group, and the combined company was later acquired by Micro Focus in 2011. Under Micro Focus, OES continued to be supported as part of its portfolio, with updates tied to newer SUSE Linux releases and evolving enterprise IT needs. While not marketed as a primary platform for new deployments, OES remained in use in organizations needing ongoing support for legacy NetWare environments and mixed Linux/NetWare ecosystems.

Current status: OES remains deployed in some on‑premises environments that require continuity with NetWare-based workflows, directory services, and NSS storage. Micro Focus continues to provide maintenance and support where applicable, though development activity for new features has been limited relative to newer, cloud-focused platforms.
