The process of dentin formation begins with the differentiation of odontoblasts from dental pulp stem cells. As odontoblasts mature, they extend processes that penetrate the dental papilla, a mesenchyme-derived tissue that surrounds the dental pulp. These processes, known as odontoblastic processes, are responsible for the secretion of predentin, a precursor to dentin. The predentin is then mineralized to form mature dentin.
