Odlupování, also known as skin peeling or desquamation, is a natural process where the outermost layer of the skin, the epidermis, sheds dead cells. This shedding is a continuous cycle, with new skin cells being generated in the deeper layers of the epidermis and migrating to the surface to replace the old ones. The rate of shedding can vary depending on factors such as age, skin type, and environmental conditions.

Several factors can influence the rate and appearance of odlupování. Dryness is a common cause, leading to visible flakes. Sunburn can also trigger significant peeling as the damaged skin is shed. Certain skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and acne can also involve increased or abnormal shedding. Chemical exfoliants, such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), are often used in skincare products to intentionally promote cell turnover and remove dead skin cells. Physical exfoliants, like scrubs, also aid in removing these cells.

While some degree of odlupování is normal and beneficial for maintaining healthy skin, excessive or sudden peeling can indicate an underlying issue.
