Odic refers to the odic force, a hypothesized vital energy proposed in the 1840s by the German physicist Karl von Reichenbach. Reichenbach reported that magnets, crystals, flame, and living beings emitted a subtle emanation he called od or the odic force, which he believed could be perceived as an odic aura surrounding objects and people. He suggested that odic energy varied in strength and hue and could be intensified or directed under certain conditions, such as through contact with metals or specific environmental factors. He described methods and instruments to sense or visualize these emissions, including sensitive plates and observational techniques.

The concept attracted interest in 19th-century science and among contemporaries exploring vitalism, magnetism, and the paranormal. Odic theory influenced neighboring ideas about life energy and auras and found supporters in some occult, spiritualist, and occult-adjacent circles. However, odic phenomena were controversial and difficult to replicate under controlled conditions. Critics argued that the observations could be explained by experimental bias, subjective perception, or inadequate methodology. Over time, the odic force failed to gain acceptance as a physical or physiological phenomenon, and mainstream science largely abandoned it by the late 19th century.

Today, odic is retained mainly as a historical note in the study of vitalism and early psychical research. It is regarded as a discredited hypothesis about a universal life energy, though it continues to appear in discussions of 19th-century science and the development of ideas about human aura and energy fields in cultural contexts.
