Early odometers were mechanical, using a rotating wheel or axle to count revolutions and convert them into distance. Maintaining an odometer’s accuracy is crucial. Tampering with an odometer, such as rolling back the mileage, is illegal in many jurisdictions and can result in legal consequences. Regular vehicle inspections and manufacturer calibrations help ensure odometer reliability.
