Chemical oceanography analyzes the composition of seawater, including nutrients, gases, and trace elements, to assess biogeochemical cycles. Biological oceanography investigates marine organisms, their ecological interactions, and the productivity of ocean ecosystems. Geological oceanography (or marine geology) studies seafloor structures, sedimentary processes, and tectonic activity.

Key research areas include climate regulation through the ocean’s role in carbon sequestration and heat distribution, marine resource management, pollution tracking, and the assessment of hazards such as tsunamis and storm surges. International collaboration is organized through bodies like the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) and the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE), which promote data sharing, standardization, and capacity building.

Oceanographic findings inform policy decisions on fisheries, coastal development, and climate mitigation. The discipline continues to evolve with advances in autonomous vehicles, high‑resolution modeling, and interdisciplinary approaches that link ocean science to societal challenges.
