The word is formed from ob-, a negating prefix meaning “un-” or “not,” and märkta, the participle meaning “marked.”

In linguistic analysis, obemärkta forms or items are those without overt grammatical markers such as gender, number, or case; in data and information systems, obemärkta entries are those without assigned tags or classifications. The concept is related to but distinct from the general English term unmarked; in many contexts English-speaking scholars simply use unmarked.

Usage of obemärkta can occur in discussions about typology, morphology, and semiotics, helping to describe phenomena where the absence of marking is functionally significant, for example in ambiguity, learnability, or interface design.
