Obdélníky are a fundamental shape in Euclidean geometry. An obdélník is a quadrilateral with four right angles. This means that all four interior angles measure 90 degrees. As a consequence of having four right angles, opposite sides of an obdélník are parallel and equal in length. The term "obdélník" is the Czech word for rectangle.

A key property of an obdélník is that its diagonals are equal in length and bisect each other. If you draw the two diagonals of an obdélník, they will intersect at their midpoint, and the distance from each vertex to the intersection point will be the same. The area of an obdélník is calculated by multiplying the length of its two adjacent sides, often referred to as its length and width. The perimeter of an obdélník is twice the sum of its length and width.

Special cases of obdélníky include squares, which are obdélníky where all four sides are of equal length. Therefore, a square is a special type of obdélník, but not all obdélníky are squares. Obdélníky are ubiquitous in the real world, appearing in everything from doors and windows to screens and buildings. Their simple and predictable properties make them a cornerstone of geometry and design.
