Nødetat, or nødetater in plural, is a Danish term used to describe the emergency response sector—the police, fire and rescue services, and the pre-hospital medical service—that mobilizes to handle acute incidents and crises. The term is widely used in media and by the public to refer to the combined response, rather than a single formal organization.

Etymology and scope: The word combines nødt- (emergency) with etat (agency or service). It is not an official organizational name; the actual agencies operate under separate laws and authorities. The concept covers the primary services that respond to urgent situations and coordinate when needed.

Components and roles: The police (Politi) enforce the law, protect people and property, and respond to security incidents; the fire and rescue service (Brandvæsen) prevents and fights fires, conducts rescues, and handles hazardous environments; the ambulance service provides medical assessment, treatment, and transport to hospital. In incidents, one or more of these services may be involved, often working in tandem.

Coordination and operations: Emergency calls to the national number 112 are answered by an alarm center that prioritizes and dispatches the appropriate nødetat units. In larger or more complex events, inter-agency coordination centers and regional authorities organize joint operations, training, and information sharing to improve interoperability across services.
