Névszerver, often translated as "nameserver" or "DNS server", is a fundamental component of the Domain Name System (DNS). Its primary function is to translate human-readable domain names, such as example.com, into machine-readable IP addresses, like 192.168.1.1. This translation is crucial for the internet to function, as computers communicate using numerical IP addresses, while humans find it easier to remember and use names.

When you type a domain name into your web browser, your computer sends a query to a configured névszerver. This server then looks up the corresponding IP address in its records or queries other névszerverek if it doesn't have the information locally. This process is hierarchical, with different névszerverek responsible for different parts of the DNS structure, starting from the root zone down to specific domain names.

There are several types of névszerverek. Authoritative névszerverek hold the definitive records for a specific domain. Recursive névszerverek, often provided by internet service providers (ISPs) or public services like Google DNS or Cloudflare DNS, handle the queries from end-users and perform the necessary lookups across the DNS hierarchy. Caching névszerverek store frequently accessed DNS records to speed up subsequent requests. Without névszerverek, navigating the internet would be a much more difficult and impractical task.
