Næringskjedens, a Norwegian term, translates to "food chain" in English and describes the transfer of energy from one organism to another in an ecosystem. It illustrates how energy flows through a series of organisms as they are consumed. At the base of most food chains are producers, typically plants or algae, which create their own food through photosynthesis. These producers are then consumed by primary consumers, which are herbivores. Primary consumers are subsequently eaten by secondary consumers, which are carnivores or omnivores. This can continue with tertiary consumers, quaternary consumers, and so on, forming progressively higher trophic levels.

The concept of a food chain highlights the interconnectedness of life within an environment. The availability of energy at each level is dependent on the level below it. If a producer population declines, it impacts all subsequent consumers. Similarly, the removal of a predator can lead to an overpopulation of its prey, which in turn can deplete the resources at lower trophic levels.
