Näytteenottomenetelmät, often translated as sampling methods or techniques, refer to the systematic processes used to select a representative subset of a larger population or material for analysis. The goal of using sampling methods is to obtain information about the entire group by studying only a portion of it, thereby saving time and resources while maintaining a sufficient level of accuracy. The choice of sampling method depends heavily on the nature of the population, the research question, and the available resources.

Common sampling methods can be broadly categorized into two main types: probability sampling and non-probability sampling. Probability sampling techniques ensure that every member of the population has a known, non-zero chance of being selected. Examples include simple random sampling, where each unit has an equal chance of selection; systematic sampling, which involves selecting units at regular intervals; stratified sampling, where the population is divided into subgroups and samples are drawn from each stratum; and cluster sampling, where the population is divided into clusters and entire clusters are randomly selected.

Non-probability sampling methods, on the other hand, do not rely on random selection. The selection of units is based on the researcher's judgment or convenience. Examples include convenience sampling, where participants are selected based on their easy availability; purposive sampling, where the researcher selects participants based on specific characteristics; quota sampling, which aims to select a sample that reflects the proportions of certain characteristics in the population; and snowball sampling, where existing participants recruit future participants from their acquaintances. The effectiveness and generalizability of findings from non-probability samples are often limited compared to those obtained through probability sampling.
