Näytinlaitteet, often translated as display devices or indicators, are components used to present visual information to users. They form a crucial part of many electronic systems, enabling interaction and the monitoring of operational status. The fundamental principle behind most näytinlaitteet is the conversion of electrical signals into visible light patterns.

Historically, early näytinlaitteet included cathode ray tubes (CRTs), which used electron beams to illuminate phosphorescent screens. While CRTs offered good image quality, they were bulky and energy-intensive. Modern näytinlaitteet predominantly utilize solid-state technologies. Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are a common example, employing liquid crystals that alter their light-passing properties when an electric field is applied. These are often backlit by LEDs.

Another prevalent technology is organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). OLEDs produce light directly from organic compounds when an electric current passes through them, eliminating the need for a separate backlight. This allows for thinner displays, better contrast ratios, and wider viewing angles. Other types of näytinlaitteet include light-emitting diode (LED) displays, which are often used for larger signage and video walls, and e-paper displays, which mimic the appearance of ordinary ink on paper and consume very little power.
