Nátriumvisszatartás refers to the medical condition where the body retains excessive amounts of sodium, leading to an increase in total body fluid. This phenomenon is a common feature of several physiological and pathological states.

The kidneys play a crucial role in regulating sodium balance. Hormones like aldosterone stimulate the reabsorption of sodium in the renal tubules, which in turn influences water reabsorption and helps maintain extracellular fluid volume and blood pressure. When this regulatory system malfunctions, or when there is an overload of sodium intake, nátriumvisszatartás can occur.

Several factors can contribute to nátriumvisszatartás. Congestive heart failure is a prime example, where the weakened heart leads to reduced kidney perfusion and activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, promoting sodium and water retention. This can lead to shortness of breath due to pulmonary edema, weight gain, and increased blood pressure. Management typically involves addressing the underlying cause, restricting dietary sodium intake, and using diuretic medications to promote sodium and water excretion. Monitoring electrolytes and fluid balance is essential in patients experiencing nátriumvisszatartás.
