Nyálmirigyekbl is a Hungarian term that translates to "salivary glands" in English. Salivary glands are exocrine glands in the mouth that produce saliva. They are essential for various functions, including lubrication of the mouth, digestion, taste, and oral hygiene.

There are three major pairs of salivary glands: the parotid glands, submandibular glands, and sublingual glands, along with numerous minor salivary glands scattered throughout the oral mucosa. The parotid glands are the largest and are located near the ears, secreting saliva through ducts that open into the mouth near the upper molars. The submandibular glands are located beneath the jawbone and produce a mixed serous and mucous secretion, with their ducts opening under the tongue. The sublingual glands are the smallest major glands, situated under the tongue, and their secretions are primarily mucous.

Saliva plays a crucial role in the initial stages of digestion by containing enzymes like amylase, which begins carbohydrate breakdown. It also helps moisten food, facilitating chewing and swallowing. Furthermore, saliva contains bicarbonate ions that buffer the pH of the mouth, protecting tooth enamel from acid. Antibodies and enzymes in saliva contribute to oral defense against bacteria and fungi. Dysfunction of salivary glands can lead to conditions like dry mouth (xerostomia), which can increase the risk of dental caries and infections.
