Nyálkagombákat, often translated as slime molds, are a diverse group of eukaryotic organisms that exhibit characteristics of both fungi and amoebas. Despite their common name, they are not true fungi. Instead, they belong to the kingdom Protista. Slime molds are typically found in damp, dark environments such as forest floors, decaying logs, and leaf litter, where they play a vital role as decomposers.

There are two main types of slime molds: plasmodial slime molds and cellular slime molds. Plasmodial slime molds exist as a single, large, multinucleate cell called a plasmodium. This plasmodium can creep along surfaces, engulfing bacteria, yeast, and fungal spores as food. When conditions become unfavorable, such as a lack of food or moisture, the plasmodium differentiates and forms fruiting bodies, which produce spores. Cellular slime molds, on the other hand, live as individual amoeboid cells. Under favorable conditions, they live independently. However, when food becomes scarce, these individual cells aggregate to form a multicellular slug-like structure called a pseudoplasmodium. This pseudoplasmodium then moves and eventually develops into a fruiting body, releasing spores that can develop into new individual amoebas.

The life cycles of slime molds are fascinating and complex, involving both vegetative and reproductive stages. Their ability to transition between unicellular and multicellular forms, and their role in breaking down organic matter, makes them significant components of soil ecosystems. Scientists study slime molds for their unique cellular behavior, particularly their collective movement and decision-making processes, which offer insights into fundamental biological principles.
