Lymph nodes, known as nyirokcsomók in Hungarian, are small, bean-shaped glands scattered throughout the body's lymphatic system. They are a crucial part of the immune system, acting as filters for lymph fluid. Lymph fluid circulates through the body, collecting waste products, bacteria, viruses, and abnormal cells. As this fluid passes through the lymph nodes, specialized immune cells within the nodes, such as lymphocytes and macrophages, identify and neutralize harmful substances.

When the body encounters an infection or other foreign invader, lymph nodes can become swollen and tender. This swelling, often referred to as swollen glands, is a sign that the immune system is actively fighting off the threat. The size and location of swollen lymph nodes can sometimes provide clues about the nature and location of an infection or disease. For example, swollen lymph nodes in the neck might indicate a throat infection, while those in the armpit could be related to an infection in the arm or breast.

Beyond filtering lymph, lymph nodes are also sites where immune responses are initiated. They house various immune cells that mature and multiply within them. These cells are then released into the bloodstream to further combat infections. Diseases affecting the lymph nodes themselves, such as lymphoma, are a significant area of medical study. Understanding the function and behavior of lymph nodes is therefore essential for diagnosing and treating a wide range of health conditions.
