Numbertieteessä is the Finnish term for number theory, a branch of mathematics that studies integers and their properties. In Finnish the field is commonly called lukuteoria. The core topics include divisibility, prime numbers, modular arithmetic, Diophantine equations, and arithmetic functions. The field is typically divided into several subareas, including elementary number theory, analytic number theory, algebraic number theory, and arithmetic geometry, often complemented by computational and experimental approaches.

Elementary number theory uses mostly elementary methods to prove results about integers, with classic examples such as Euclid’s proof of the infinitude of primes and the fundamental theorem of arithmetic, as well as the study of congruences. Analytic number theory applies tools from analysis to number-theoretic questions and includes the study of the distribution of primes via the prime number theorem and the analysis of zeta- and L-functions. Algebraic number theory investigates number fields, rings of integers, units, and class numbers, linking arithmetic to algebra. Arithmetic geometry connects number theory with algebraic geometry, focusing on solutions to equations on algebraic varieties, with elliptic curves and the study of rational points playing a central role.

Computational number theory develops algorithms for factoring, primality testing, discrete logarithms, and other problems, supporting both theory and practical applications. The field has ancient roots and matured through the work of mathematicians such as Euclid, Fermat, Euler, Dirichlet, Gauss, and more recently Wiles and others. Applications include cryptography, coding theory, and algorithmic number theory, while contemporary research continues to probe prime distributions, Diophantine problems, modular forms, and their connections to geometry and computation.
