Nukleinsyrer are vital macromolecules found in all living organisms. They are essential for storing and transmitting genetic information, as well as for protein synthesis. The two primary types of nucleic acids are deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA).

DNA is the blueprint of life, carrying the genetic instructions used in the growth, development, functioning, and reproduction of all known organisms and many viruses. It typically exists as a double helix, with two strands wound around each other. The building blocks of DNA are nucleotides, each composed of a deoxyribose sugar, a phosphate group, and one of four nitrogenous bases: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), or thymine (T). RNA plays a crucial role in translating the genetic information stored in DNA into proteins. Unlike DNA, RNA is usually single-stranded and contains a ribose sugar instead of deoxyribose. It also has uracil (U) in place of thymine. There are several types of RNA, including messenger RNA (mRNA), transfer RNA (tRNA), and ribosomal RNA (rRNA), each with specific functions in protein synthesis.

The process of DNA replication ensures that genetic information is accurately passed from one generation of cells to the next. Transcription is the process by which DNA's genetic code is copied into RNA, and translation is the process by which RNA directs the synthesis of proteins. These fundamental processes underpin all biological functions and heredity.
