Nostalji, in Turkish usage, refers to nostalgia—a sentimental longing for the past, often combined with warmth and a touch of melancholy. It can involve memories of childhood, youth, or earlier eras, and may be triggered by familiar sounds, smells, objects, places, or media.

The term nostalji is a loanword adapted from the English word nostalgia, which itself derives from Greek nostos, meaning “return home,” and algos, meaning “pain.” In Turkish, nostalji is used in everyday language to describe both personal reminiscence and a broader cultural longing for past times.

Nostalji manifests in individual experiences as memory and reminiscence, but it also appears as a cultural phenomenon. It features prominently in media, marketing, and fashion through retro aesthetics, classic films, vintage products, and tribute events. Collectively, it can reflect a shared memory of a past era, sometimes idealized and reimagined in contemporary contexts.

Psychologically, nostalgia is often mixed but tends to have positive associations. It can enhance social connectedness, provide a sense of continuity and meaning, and serve as a coping resource during periods of change or uncertainty. At times, it can evoke sadness if the past is perceived as better than the present or if one dwells on what is lost.
