Noogen, also known as noogen or noosphere, is a philosophical and scientific concept that describes the sphere of human thought, reason, and collective consciousness. It is often viewed as an emergent layer of the Earth's biosphere, analogous to the lithosphere (rock) and the biosphere (life). The term was coined by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, a French philosopher and paleontologist, and Vladimir Vernadsky, a Russian geochemist.

Vernadsky initially proposed the noosphere as a new geological era, the third stage of Earth's development following the geosphere and the biosphere. He envisioned it as a natural evolutionary process, where the increasing complexity of life and the development of human intelligence led to a global layer of thought and activity. Teilhard de Chardin further developed this idea, emphasizing the spiritual and evolutionary aspects of the noosphere. He saw it as a unifying force, leading humanity towards a point of ultimate consciousness and convergence, which he termed the Omega Point.

The concept has been interpreted in various ways. Some see it as a literal, tangible layer of information and collective consciousness that envelopes the planet, influenced by the internet and global communication networks. Others view it more metaphorically, as a descriptor of the growing interconnectedness and shared understanding among humans. Regardless of interpretation, the noogen represents the idea that human thought and consciousness are not merely individual phenomena but have a collective and potentially transformative impact on the planet and its future.
