Noocytes are a recently identified class of cells first reported in the mid‑2020s by a consortium of cellular biologists studying vertebrate neurogenesis. They are defined by a distinct combination of surface markers, including the ectodermal protein Nestin and the neural progenitor marker Sox2, as well as a unique lipid composition enriched in plasmalogens. Microscopic examination places noocytes within the ciliary neuroepithelial zone, where they appear to migrate along radial glial scaffolds during early embryonic development.

Genetic profiling reveals that noocytes express a set of transcription factors not found in other progenitor populations, such as ETV5 and TCF4, suggesting a specialized developmental trajectory. Functional studies using conditional knock‑out models have shown that loss of noocyte‑specific gene NOCST reduces cortical thickness and impairs synaptic plasticity in adult mice. Conversely, over‑expression of NOCST enhances dendritic branching and improves performance in maze‑based learning assays.

The exact physiological role of noocytes in humans remains under investigation, though preliminary data indicate they may contribute to neurogenesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus and participate in repair processes following traumatic injury.
