Nonvegetal is an adjective used to describe something that is not derived from plants or plant matter. In contrast to vegetal, nonvegetal elements originate from animals, minerals, fungi, or synthetic processes, or are otherwise not plant-based. The term is most common in technical or analytical writing where a plant/non-plant distinction is relevant, rather than in everyday speech.

Origin and formation: The word is formed by prefixing non- to vegetal, which itself comes from Latin vegetalis via French or English adoption; nonvegetal thus literally means "not vegetal." It is rarely used in isolation and more often appears as part of a compound description (nonvegetal compounds, nonvegetal flavors, nonvegetal proteins).

Applications: In gastronomy and sensory analysis, nonvegetal flavors describe components lacking vegetal notes such as grassy or green pepper; instead, they may be meaty, mineral, or fermented. In food science and pharmacology, nonvegetal ingredients indicate sources other than plants, including animal products, minerals, or synthetic substitutes. In taxonomy or materials science, descriptions may distinguish nonvegetal materials from plant-derived ones.

Limitations: The term is uncommon outside specialized contexts and can be vague without specification of source. When clarity is needed, it is preferable to indicate the exact origin (animal-based, mineral-based, synthetic, etc.) or to use more precise terms such as "animal-derived" or "synthetic."
