Misdiagnosing a nonsyphilitic condition as syphilis can lead to unnecessary and potentially harmful antibiotic treatments. Conversely, mistaking syphilis for another condition can result in delayed or missed treatment, allowing the infection to progress and cause severe, irreversible damage.
