Nonlabelable is an adjective used to describe objects, instances, or situations that cannot be assigned labels under a specified labeling scheme or taxonomy. The term is not a formal technical label in most fields, but it is used informally to highlight nonexistence of a valid labeling within defined constraints.

In mathematics, and particularly in graph labeling, a graph may be described as nonlabelable with respect to a given labeling scheme when no assignment of labels satisfies the scheme’s rules. For example, if a scheme requires a unique label for every adjacent pair or a certain numeric relationship among labels, some graphs may fail to admit such a labeling. The designation emphasizes the limits of a particular labeling approach rather than a property of the object in isolation.

In data science and linguistics, nonlabelable can apply to samples or items that do not fit any category in the current annotation schema, or for which there is insufficient information to assign a meaningful label. This concept often motivates the expansion of label sets, the use of uncertainty or abstention options, or the adoption of alternative labeling strategies such as soft or probabilistic labels.

Usage notes emphasize that nonlabelable is context-dependent: an item may be nonlabelable under one scheme but labelable under another.
