They can act as modifiers, attaching to a noun (The book read by many people is out of print) or as adverbial clauses indicating purpose, result, time, or reason (He paused to listen; Having studied, she knew the material).

Cross-linguistically, nonfinite clauses are a common feature, though their morphosyntactic realization varies. Some languages mark nonfinite forms with dedicated endings or auxiliary constructions, while others rely on infinitives, participles, or gerund-like forms.
