nonemoji

Nonemoji is a term used to describe characters in the Unicode standard that do not have the Emoji property assigned by the Unicode Consortium. These characters are typically rendered as standard text glyphs rather than as emoji pictographs, although rendering depends on the font and platform.

The set of nonemoji includes letters, digits, punctuation marks, technical symbols, spaces, combining marks, and many symbols that are not designated as emoji. By contrast, emoji encompasses a defined subset of characters plus characters formed by sequences (such as ZWJ joiners) that produce pictographic glyphs.

Some code points can be displayed either as emoji or as text depending on font selection or user settings; the same base code point may be treated as nonemoji in one context and as emoji in another.

Detection and use: Software often relies on the Unicode Emoji property or on platform-specific libraries to identify emoji. Nonemoji filtering is used for text processing, sanitization, accessibility, and input validation. There are caveats: emoji can be created via sequences and emoji presentation can be overridden by font preferences; thus determining nonemoji requires evaluating code point sequences and presentation properties.
